INT 232 Ruth Hernandez week 10: Container Home Process This week has been very helpful in the development of my project about the container home. As part of my review, Amber and Professor Wendy were able to provide me with feedback that is helping me design my floor plan in a good way. As part of the feedback, one of the most important suggestions is the need to rethink the placement of the library. Amber suggested that the library should be moved upstairs so we can keep that quiet space more private and actually quiet. This is better because library room would be in a more private space. Another part of the feedback was also put a little bit more of details in my conceptual design, related to material, skims and sustainability. Another significant topic that we covered in our class was building codes and regulations. It is important to consider the regulations depending on the place of the construction, especially in cases such as the construction of a container home. I will be resear...

INT 232 Ruth Hernandez week 9: Concept statement, and Diagrams This week, we look a number of new forms of drawings and project processes that are going to be useful as we continue the development of our container home designs. Although some of the concepts were familiar to me, there were others that were new and proved to help me better understand how to organize a space more effectively.  One concept that was familiar to me was the concept statement. This is a concept that I have used in the past on some projects, so it was comfortable to work with it again. This concept helps to ensure that the entire design is tied together by a single idea or vision.  Each of these concepts plays a significant part in the early stages of the design, especially in relation to the planning. Adjacency matrix is a tool that can be employed to plan and arrange the relationship between various rooms within a given space. This tool can be represented in a table format that indicates the level of...

INT 232 Ruth Hernandez Blog 7 Container Home Introduction  In class this week, we learned about our container home project. We cover the requirements for this project and how to start preparing for it. We focus on the research part and the need to look for precedents to help us on the design process. This includes looking for images of existing container home projects, their floor plans, and any other information that will be helpful to us. Another key part of this assignment involves deciding on a particular location for the homes for the design. This will influence the design for both the interior and exterior spaces. I am going to choose a beachy place, in Mexico called Merida, for me this place is very special to me because every year I visit my best friend who lives there and we always have so many good times in this beach.  Another part involves finding inspirational images that represent the concept that we want to achieve. I think that this project is going to b...

INT 270 Ruth Hernandez   Blog 6 Sherwin-Williams Presentation pt.2 This week, we had our guest speaker Kylinn speak to us again. This week it was more about colors in general. She talked to us about how color trends change over different periods in history and how different social, economic, and cultural events affect the colors we see in design. One of the periods that really stood out to me was the 1960s and 1970s. These were two decades that really had a bold and vibrant color palette. Colors such as mustard yellow, burnt orange, avocado green, and brown were really popular during this time and are still associated with this era today. These were really about intensity and self-expression, and this was definitely evident in the interior design that was popular during this time.                                                       ...

INT 270 Ruth Hernandez   Blog 5 Sherwin-Williams Presentation The learning for this week was about understanding paint in terms of more than just color. According to Paint, Specs & Color Resources by Sherwin-Williams, paint has three major purposes: protecting a substrate, enhancing aesthetics, and delivering advanced performance technology. Paint protects against the elements, corrosion, dirt, and moisture, while also using color and gloss to enhance design. One of the concepts that were important to understand is that all paints are not the same. Paint is composed of four major parts: pigments, binders, liquids/solvents, and additives. Pigments are what give paint color and hide, binders are what give paint adhesion and durability, solvents are what help to apply the paint, and additives are what improve performance properties such as washability and mildew resistance. The lecture also discusses the various kinds of coatings, such as alkyd (oil-based), latex (wate...

INT 270 Ruth Hernandez   Blog 4 Balance, Unity, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Contrast, and Detail Balance is the concept of the distribution of visual elements in a space. A space can be balanced in a symmetrical way, asymmetrical (dynamic and contemporary), or in a radial way (centered around a focal point). A space lacking balance may appear awkward. Unity is the principle that ensures all elements in a space are harmonious. This is accomplished through repetition of color, material, texture, or form. When a space has unity, it appears to be well-connected rather than disjointed.  Rhythm generates movement and directs the viewer’s eye around a space. Rhythm can be achieved by repetition, progression, or transition. For instance, the use of repeated lighting fixtures or the transition from one color tone to another can create a rhythm. Proportion and Scale are the concepts of size. Proportion is the relationship between elements, while scale is the relation...

INT 270 Ruth Hernandez   Blog 3 Balance, unity, and harmony We learned how balance, unity, and harmony could affect our perception of the interior space. Balance, unity, and harmony can help designers create interior spaces that are comfortable, organized, and harmonious instead of chaotic or with disorder. In interior design, balance is described to be the distribution of visual weight in a given interior setting. It can be achieved by using elements such as symmetry, asymmetry, and radial pattern balance. When it comes to sketching, balance aids in moving the viewer’s eye in a particular interior setting, thus avoiding the appearance of one side of a setting as being heavier than the opposite side. Unity refers to all the elements within a space working together . Elements of unity within an environment are achieved by using the materials, colors, textures, and shapes consistently. When sketching an environment, repeating certain shapes or lines helps relate seeming...
