Sherwin-Williams Presentation

The learning for this week was about understanding paint in terms of more than just color. According to Paint, Specs & Color Resources by Sherwin-Williams, paint has three major purposes: protecting a substrate, enhancing aesthetics, and delivering advanced performance technology. Paint protects against the elements, corrosion, dirt, and moisture, while also using color and gloss to enhance design.

One of the concepts that were important to understand is that all paints are not the same. Paint is composed of four major parts: pigments, binders, liquids/solvents, and additives. Pigments are what give paint color and hide, binders are what give paint adhesion and durability, solvents are what help to apply the paint, and additives are what improve performance properties such as washability and mildew resistance.

The lecture also discusses the various kinds of coatings, such as alkyd (oil-based), latex (water-based), acrylic, epoxy, and urethane. For instance, latex paints are less smelly and have lower VOCs, whereas alkyd paints are smooth and durable but tend to yellow with time. Acrylic coatings are known for their strong adhesive and flexible properties, making them ideal for use both indoors and outdoors.

Another key area of discussion is painting sheen. Paint sheen is known to influence the durability of paint and its ability to reflect light. Flat paints are known to diffuse light and hide surface imperfections, whereas gloss paints are known to reflect more light and are the most durable. Paint sheen has a direct effect on the color appearance of a room.

The lecture also covered Light Reflectance Value (LRV), which is the measure of the amount of visible light a color reflects, ranging from 0 (black) to 100 (white). Dark colors with low LRV produce intimate spaces, while high LRV colors produce larger spaces. LRV is a useful design tool when choosing colors for spaces with different lighting conditions
.

In conclusion, the lessons covered this week have taught me that when it comes to paint, it is not just a matter of picking a color. There is so much more to it, including knowledge of pigments, durability, finish, lighting conditions, environmental regulations, and sustainability certifications.

  1. Ruth,
Your summary of what our guest covered was comprehensive. It shows me that you learned a lot from our guest speaker. Their is much to consider when specifying a paint for a job. Your sketch was excellent! 50/50 points
