Balance, unity, and harmony


We learned how balance, unity, and harmony could affect our perception of the interior space. Balance, unity, and harmony can help designers create interior spaces that are comfortable, organized, and harmonious instead of chaotic or with disorder.

In interior design, balance is described to be the distribution of visual weight in a given interior setting. It can be achieved by using elements such as symmetry, asymmetry, and radial pattern balance. When it comes to sketching, balance aids in moving the viewer’s eye in a particular interior setting, thus avoiding the appearance of one side of a setting as being heavier than the opposite side.

Unity refers to all the elements within a space working together. Elements of unity within an environment are achieved by using the materials, colors, textures, and shapes consistently. When sketching an environment, repeating certain shapes or lines helps relate seemingly disparate elements of space within an interior design. Without elements of unity, space may lack coherence or be confusing despite good individual design elements.


Harmony, by the other side, takes unity one step further, not just ensuring that all the elements relate to each other, but ensuring that all the elements are calm and harmonious with each other. Harmony is created when there is no element competing for the viewer's attention. In sketching harmonious spaces, smooth transitions and proportional furniture and materials are typically used.

    Ruth!! I loved the first interior space you chose! It is so balanced and pleasing to the eye, which should be our goal as designers in any space we work with. Also, your negative space drawings look super sharp.

    I agree with MaKayla- the opening image is very balanced and beautiful. Your summary was excellent. I hope you are enjoying looking at interiors with these principles in mind. Your negative space drawings are excellent. 50/50 points

INT 232 Ruth Hernandez week 9: Concept statement, and Diagrams This week, we look a number of new forms of drawings and project processes that are going to be useful as we continue the development of our container home designs. Although some of the concepts were familiar to me, there were others that were new and proved to help me better understand how to organize a space more effectively.  One concept that was familiar to me was the concept statement.
