INT 270 Ruth Hernandez   Blog 5 Sherwin-Williams Presentation The learning for this week was about understanding paint in terms of more than just color. According to Paint, Specs & Color Resources by Sherwin-Williams, paint has three major purposes: protecting a substrate, enhancing aesthetics, and delivering advanced performance technology. Paint protects against the elements, corrosion, dirt, and moisture, while also using color and gloss to enhance design. One of the concepts that were important to understand is that all paints are not the same. Paint is composed of four major parts: pigments, binders, liquids/solvents, and additives. Pigments are what give paint color and hide, binders are what give paint adhesion and durability, solvents are what help to apply the paint, and additives are what improve performance properties such as washability and mildew resistance. The lecture also discusses the various kinds of coatings, such as alkyd (oil-based), latex (wate...

INT 270 Ruth Hernandez   Blog 4 Balance, Unity, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Contrast, and Detail Balance is the concept of the distribution of visual elements in a space. A space can be balanced in a symmetrical way, asymmetrical (dynamic and contemporary), or in a radial way (centered around a focal point). A space lacking balance may appear awkward. Unity is the principle that ensures all elements in a space are harmonious. This is accomplished through repetition of color, material, texture, or form. When a space has unity, it appears to be well-connected rather than disjointed.  Rhythm generates movement and directs the viewer’s eye around a space. Rhythm can be achieved by repetition, progression, or transition. For instance, the use of repeated lighting fixtures or the transition from one color tone to another can create a rhythm. Proportion and Scale are the concepts of size. Proportion is the relationship between elements, while scale is the relation...

INT 270 Ruth Hernandez   Blog 3 Balance, unity, and harmony We learned how balance, unity, and harmony could affect our perception of the interior space. Balance, unity, and harmony can help designers create interior spaces that are comfortable, organized, and harmonious instead of chaotic or with disorder. In interior design, balance is described to be the distribution of visual weight in a given interior setting. It can be achieved by using elements such as symmetry, asymmetry, and radial pattern balance. When it comes to sketching, balance aids in moving the viewer’s eye in a particular interior setting, thus avoiding the appearance of one side of a setting as being heavier than the opposite side. Unity refers to all the elements within a space working together . Elements of unity within an environment are achieved by using the materials, colors, textures, and shapes consistently. When sketching an environment, repeating certain shapes or lines helps relate seeming...
