This weak we talk about the importance of knowing all the basic elements that we can use to design for our future interiors...

First of all, of them was the POINT:

‘‘All pictorial form begins with the point that sets itself in motion... The point moves... and the line comes into being—the first dimension. If the line shifts to form a plane, we obtain a two-dimensional element. In the movement from plane to spaces, the clash of planes gives rise to body (three-dimensional) ... A summary of the kinetic energies which move the point into a line, the line into a plane, and the plane into a spatial dimension.”
Paul Klee, The Thinking Eye: The Notebooks of Paul Klee (English translation) 1961.

The point indicates a position in space. (Ching pg3.) A point has no dimension, but it helps us to organize our surrounding elements and stabilizes them.

Now, two points can define an axis, and helps to organize building forms and spaces.

Line:
A point extended becomes a line, is capable of visually expressing direction, movement, and growth. (Ching pg8.)
There are horizontal and vertical lines both helping us to express movement across the space, bring equilibrium and represent stability. They can make a space appear taller; expansive and even elegant.

Planes:
A plane serves to define the limits or boundaries of a volume. (Ching pg.18)
A plane helps us to define the form and qualities of spaces. A plane enclosure spaces, define spatial boundaries, and unifying elements
.
There are 3 important types of planes:

the overhead plane
It can be either the roof plane, or the ceiling plane.

the wall plane
Vital to enclose our spaces with its vertical form.

the base plane
It can be either the ground plane or the floor plane.

With them we have a positive space, which is the solid mass which occupies space, and the negative space, which is a simply empty space that we can create feelings of grandeur or a sense to rest the eye.

Form:

‘‘Architectural form is the point of contact between mass and space ... Architectural forms, textures, materials, modulation of light and shade, color, all combine to inject a quality or spirit that articulates space. The quality of the architecture will be determined by the skill of the designer in using and relating these elements, both in the interior spaces and in the spaces around buildings.”

Edmund N. Bacon the Peeign of Cities 1974.

Is the shape of a room or element withing a room. They have relational properties that govern the pattern and composition of elements, which are position, orientation, and visual inertia. Can be repeated to produce a harmonious feeling.

In conclusion, all the great design and ideas come from this basic but essential elements we are learning, and from them, we can start bringing organizing spaces and interiors.

  1. Hi, Ruth! I really liked the quote you included from Paul Klee. I think that very well described the development of a space or a building when designing from the very basic concepts we talked about this week. I also realized we have similar taste and used a lot of the same pictures in our blogs haha!

  2. Ruth,
Excellent Blog entry! I loved your summary and images. You need to add your sketch for this week. The interior that you draw upside down. Look at MaKayla's Blog and she how she included her sketch. 50/50 total points
